Free Engineering Computation: An Introduction Using MATLAB and Excel
Good intro to programming, even for someone with little experience. MATLAB is not very user-freindly, and these sections take re-reading compared to the Excel topics.

We used this text for my Engineering class. I agree with the other reviewer about the "user-friendliness" of Matlab; it's not great in comparison to the Excel portions. There are a few parts where our TA advises we do research online/on Matlab itself for coding instructions rather than read the book.
Other than that, very helpful book.
