5th Edition notes: I used to have students in my GIS class buy a textbook and a separate lab manual, but the price for two books was very high. I've used the 5th edition of this book for the last 2 years as the sole required book in my introductory GIS class, and it works very well in that role. The lab steps are detailed and well described, and my students seem to find it pitched well for the course. I assign independent projects each week to be sure they get some practice thinking outside the step-by-step treatment.
6th Edition notes and caveat: The text, figures, page numbers, etc. are pretty much the same as the 5th Edition (so, since I was happy with the 5th Edition, I'm still happy). The one thing to be aware of is that the lab exercises that you open to start each chapter (starting at chapter 3) on the disc provided with the book, were saved in ArcGIS 10.1 format (not too surprising for an ArcGIS 10.1 book). The only problems for me are that: my university hasn't upgraded to 10.1 yet; you can't open any of the "canned" lab exercises with version 10.0; and apparently the publisher isn't printing the 5th Edition (for ArcGIS 10.0) any more. Fortunately I still have my copy of the 5th Edition with its disc, and a workaround to this problem occurred to me.
The new 'mgisdata' folder (6th edition) only takes up about 240MB of space, vs 900MB or so for the 5th Edition, so that will be a nice change when we do finally migrate to 10.1. I've worked all the way through the lab steps for chapters 1-7 and 16, using the 5th Edition 'mgisdata' folder, and haven't noticed any places (maybe 1 in all those steps) where the functionality or screenshots the author has you follow in the lab steps, creates a problem if you use the data from the 5th Edition.
