Free Engineering Problem Solving with C
The layout of this text is very helpful for keeping the material straight. It is written with clarity. The real-world sample problems are interesting. I have just one concern, which kept me from giving it 5 stars: there are errors in some of the answers to practice problems. I don't see why these would not have all been carefully checked. (For reference, I have the international edition.) Nonetheless, a great text!

I have been searching a dozen years or more for a good introductory programming book for mechanical engineers. While I have a shelf full of texts claiming to fit the bill, I have yet to find one that is really satisfactory.
Etter's book looked promising. The general organization of the book is pretty good, and the problems used as examples have more of an engineering flair than is typical of intro programming books. I also like that there are style notes throughout as well as the no-bug notes of common mistakes.
Unfortunately, the organization has lapses. For example, the char data type along with the ctype.h library are introduced in chapter 2 (which is the first chapter dealing with code) while strings and arrays are not introduced until 3/4 of the way through the book -- by which time any memory of char has faded away for most students.
While many of the style comments offer good advice, some of the style exhibited in the example programs is terrible. For example, function prototypes are written inside of main rather than near the beginning of the file, or in a header file.
And finally, this is the 4th edition of the book; why is the bubble sort example (p 243) full of errors (there are missing brackets, random indentation, and an absolutely horrible use of an extra variable m that serves no purpose but to confuse). How this got past the editors (especially after 4 editions) beats me.
My search for the ideal C text continues.
