I have found this book useful for my CCIE security preparations. It would have been a difficult task if I had to compile Cisco ASA VPN configuration topics. The source obviously would have been Cisco's website. This book eliminates the hurdle. It has nicely compiled VPN topics, configurations and explanations.
CCNP Security Certification is focused on implementing Cisco ASA firewalls; Cisco ASA VPN, Cisco IPS/IDS and Cisco Router and Switch security. This book covers all aspects of VPN technology implementation using Cisco ASA Firewall/VPN devices.
The book starts with Cisco ASA device Architecture and technology over view. This chapter briefly describes different type of VPN technology and protocol stacks, Cisco ASA models and their configurations, licensing for incorporating various VPN technologies. Next the author describes how to create policies, inheritances and attributes that are consumed by various types of VPN configurations.
At the high level the VPN technologies covered are 1. Clientless SSL VPN, 2. Client based AnyConnect VPN 3.Remote Access Client based 4. Easy VPN Solutions and 5.Site-to-Site VPNs. Important points are pointed out using Notes. It is very useful when you take Certification exam. Some of the questions may even relate to the "Note" section.
Both command line and ASDM (GUI) based methods are described in this book. Screen shots are visible and CLI examples are helpful. For ASDM configurations, each section and panes are described with equivalent CLI commands using tables.
The style and presentation of different topics in the book is identical to the Official Cert guide CCNP Security Series. Each chapter consists of the following sections.
The Official Cert Guide for the CCNP Security VPN exam 642-648 is Howard Hooper's update to his first CCNP Security VPN exam Cert Guide based on the new exam 2.0 topics. The CCNP Security is the second most popular Cisco professional level certification next to the Routing and Switching track. As such, Cisco Press has committed to developing excellent learning materials to help prepare for the exam. They feature an official certification guide for each of the 4 CCNP Security Exams. This guide is another timely release of on an exam certification guide to coincide with Cisco's updated exam topics and new exam, which was recently released.
You'll find that the exam topics list in the introduction of the book are based on the old exam topics, however you will find that the chapters and content map perfectly to the 2.0 exam topics that can be found on CiscoLearningNetwork.com. This is a soup-to-nuts preparation resource to the VPN exam. It is a great complement to Cisco's official VPN Course - Deploying Cisco ASA VPN Solutions (VPN v2.0), each of which mirror the exam topics for the 2.0 VPN exam. On the CD you'll find an excellent exam engine containing the question for the "Did I know this already" section of each chapter as well as an additional exam containing 87 questions to help prepare you for the exam. The book is a good blend of both CLI configuration of the VPN features as well as copious screenshots of the ASDM interface giving the user in many instances the ability to compare and contrast the two different configuration methods. The writing style is technically sufficient to convey the configuration concepts, however the readability and clarity of the text can be difficult at times. You'll want hands on real gear to practice the examples in the book.
