Free Starting Out with Java: From Control Structures through Objects,
I have used Prof. Tony Gaddis book for many different courses. This book contains 16 chapters, from the Java Fundamentals to SQL databases. Each chapter starts with theory, examples and clear instructions.
It can be used as one-semester course covering 12 chapters, or as a two-semester course. The only drawback is the lack of real-life business applications. I recommend this book to everyone.

This was the book prescribed by my professor and it is an excellent source for learning Java, especially for beginners.
