Free Java Programming
This is the book we are using in class has good illustrations and helps make the java languange really understandable. This is the copy Troy University is currently using for advanced computer programming.

I had to purchase this book for school at the very high price of around 120 dollars. It conveys information okay for anyone with previous knowledge of java, but for beginners it's not what you want to open first. It has good programming projects and review questions at the end of each chapter, but the book contains no solutions which really makes it incomplete in my opinion. The only way to use this book to self-study is by coding out each question and compiling and running it, or trying to find the answer in the text. I have bought many better programming books for a third of the price of this one. The only reason I would get this would be for school, even then ask your professor before hand if you can purchase a different book. (Check out Murach's for good programming books)
