Free So You Want to Be a Physician Assistant - second edition
This is an outstanding resource on the Physician Assistant profession. It is well written, personable, and easy-to-read. The author is obviously a people-person, and this comes clearly through in her writing! You want to keep reading because you feel like you're having a conversation with an old friend that you love and admire.
I begin my PA program in one month. Though part of me wishes I would have come across this book earlier in my path toward becoming a PA, I know it only would have reinforced my decision to become a PA, and for me, the timing in finding this book was perfect. Having been accepted to PA school, I could fully enjoy the book without worry about my application process :) Plus, this book is not a primer on how to get accepted to a PA program. It provides a thorough introduction to the vast potential and opportunities that the Physician Assistant profession offers at this point in time.
I particularly enjoyed the vignettes written by actual working PA's throughout the country in more than 25 different areas of medicine. This outstanding collection of "day in the life" essays is worth the price of the book alone. However, the author goes to great lengths to include loads of other helpful information, such as some history of the profession and how things are changing in the healthcare world with respect to the new Health Care Act recently passed, regulations for working PA's, different organizations that PA's can become part of, and even a chapter on how to balance your life between your professional and personal spheres. Altogether this book was incredibly helpful and I'm sure I will turn to it as a resource again in the future.
