Free The Familiar Physician: Saving Your Doctor In the Era of Obamacare
As a physician I have always hoped that the relationship I establish with my patients is something that makes a difference to both parties. This book helped confirm for me the value of that bond. It re-inspired me, in the midst of all the challenges and changes, to concentrate on the individual in my exam room.
It tells the story of a Family Medicine doctor's personal journey to improve his practice and his life, interwoven with the story of the medical home and the role IBM played in its developmente. It was helpful for me as I think it will be for everyone, to learn more about this recent history in American medicine and how it will make primary care more effective. Few issues are more important to our nation as health care and none are as important on a personal level. The Familiar Physician reinforces that theme in a clear and consistent way and I highly recommend it for everyone who provides or receives medical care.

If you truly want to understand what's broken in our current healthcare delivery systems and how they can be fixed, read this book. If you want a better understanding of the Affordable Care Act and it's potential impact, good and bad, on healthcare in America, read this book. If you're interested in how to solve the problems facing doctors and patients alike now and in the future (without the political posturing and rhetoric), read this book.
It's easy to read and refreshingly lacking in jargon and medical-speak. If you're a doctor or if you've ever been to a doctor, you will understand and relate to the issues discussed by Dr. Anderson and his co-authors. No lecturing, no hyperbole. It's just good story-telling that in the process provides perhaps the best idea yet on how to improve our healthcare system.
