This is probably the worst textbook I have ever had for a class. It teaches you very little of real value and most of the labs involve you using commercial forensics tools (but don't really teach you anything other than to click here to do this or that).
The labs are also of poor quality and even lead you false conclusions! For example, lab 6-1 has you compare two Word files with a Hex editor (one is Office 95 format and the other is Office 2000 format). The lab tells you to compare the two files manually with your eyes and says they should be identical. It completely neglects to tell you that the software you are using can do comparisons between files automatically (and without error prone human eyes). There are 2000+ byte level differences and if you look a little closer, the files aren't even the same size!
A lot of the content in this book is horribly outdated. The latest version of Windows it discusses is Vista. I just sat through a lecture on the boot process for Macs using OS 9 (which was End of Life around 2001-2002). The latest version of Mac OS X it talks about is 10.4. It has absolutely no discussion of Intel based Macs (which are the only Macs made new since like 2006).
If you want to actually learn something, do not buy this book. If this is a book for a class you are considering taking, and you actually have a desire to learn something, do not take the class. On the other hand, if your instructor is using this book they are probably lazy so your homework will consist of doing these pointless labs and the tests will be multiple choice questions you can ace if you memorize the useless crap in the book (even better if its an open book test - an even easier A).
