When bright lives are derailed by schizophrenia, bewildered and anxious families struggle to help, and to cope, even as scientists search for causes and treatments that prove elusive. Painful and often misunderstood, schizophrenia profoundly affects people who have the disease and their loved ones. Here Ronald Chase, an accomplished biologist, sets out to discover the facts about the disease and better understand what happened to his older brother, Jim, who developed schizophrenia as a young adult.
Chase’s account alternates between a fiercely loyal and honest memoir and rigorous scientific exploration. He finds scientific answers to deeply personal questions about the course of his brother’s illness. He describes psychiatric practice from the 1950s—when electroconvulsive shock therapy was common and the use of antipsychotic medications was in its infancy—to the development of newer treatments in the 1990s. Current medical and scientific research increases our understanding of genetic and environmental causes of the disease.
Chase also explores the stigma of mental illness, the evolution of schizophrenia, the paradox of its persistence despite low reproduction rates in persons with the disease, and the human stories behind death statistics. With the author’s intimate knowledge of the suffering caused by this disease, Schizophrenia emphasizes research strategies, the importance of sound scientific approaches, and the challenges that remain.

Free Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia, to me, has always seemed like one of the worst things that can happen to a person. I have anxiety issues, which is bad enough, but at least I have insight into my condition. What would it be like if your paranoid ideas were absolutely real to you, if you couldn't tell what's reality and what's only in your head? If your own thoughts were out of your control? Ron Chase's older brother, Jim, was unfortunate enough to find out.
Chase does a great job of relating his brother's story. I had a clear idea of the person Jim was before his disease set in: an incredibly bright, articulate young man. Even schizophrenia didn't take his intellect from him. This was some comfort, as before I'd assumed that sufferers never get a break from their disease. Schizophrenia did, however, make him largely unable to use it; we see how his paranoia and delusions prevented from having a career and stable relationships with people outside his family. I loved that Chase includes some of his brother's writing, too; Jim's voice comes through strong. It's incredibly sad that he was never allowed to reach his full potential and become a published author, but wonderful that Chase gives him at audience for at least some of his words. The story isn't just about Jim but also about his family. Chase gets across how painful it was for his family to deal with seeing someone they loved changed by schizophrenia, how they didn't completely understand the disease or what had caused it. His mother, especially, had a lot of guilt, as the theories of the day said that it was the family's fault. The relationship between the two brothers is inspiring; schizophrenia comes between Ron and Jim sometimes, but Ron never abandons his brother.
