Free HTML5 and CSS: Comprehensive
First of all, I'll give some background about myself -- just to put this review in perspective. I've been doing web design/web development for about 11 years. I started when I was 12 and I'm 23 now. Actually, I really started when I was 8 or 9 [making javascript alert trap pages and making simple pages in Microsoft Front Page]. I would consider myself an expert in web technologies, I'm well versed in HTML/XHTML/XML, CSS, JavaScript & jQuery, PHP, MySQL, Oracle PL/SQL, C, and C++. I'm currently learning Java and Python. I also know a little bit of Scheme, and I can read code in a other languages as well.
Anyway, I thought this book was pretty good content wise, it has a lot to offer. However, it really just covers the feature and all the exercises are bare-bones projects with a plain white background. If you have never done web design or development before and want to learn then this is a really good book. You will definitely learn HTML5 in its entirety and you will learn some JavaScript as well.
If you are looking for an advanced book that covers more than just 'how to use this tag, how to use than tag, how to apply this style, how to apply that style' this book is not for you. This book just barely scratches the surface. It doesn't teach advanced stylesheets. It's definitely possible to make an awesome website without any images using JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. Hell, it's even possible without the JavaScript! This book doesn't elaborate on all the cook tricks you can do with CSS code to make your site look better. It doesn't talk about cross browser compatibility issues or tell you how to fix them. It doesn't tell you how to make all browsers render HTML5 tags correctly.
