I was asked to evaluate this book for our hospital and quickly discovered that it was a valuable resource for all of our employees. After evaluating it with our department leaders, we decided that each employee should have a copy to read and apply to their work and personal lives. While it is geared toward healthcare, the lessons can be applied in any industry or any walk of life.
This book has led to the development of a program for a Culture of Ownership at our institution. Joe Tye has imparted key points in the Florence Prescription such as: The 8 Essential Characteristics of a Culture of Ownership, a look at values, owning vs. renting the job, self-empowerment and "Proceed Until Apprehended". Our Ownership vision is Joe's concept. It states: "Encourage people to hold themselves responsible and accountable for their attitudes and actions, and to empower themselves to do the right thing for patients."
Here are a few examples of what our employees have said about the book and the program that we developed from it:
* "The subject matter is important for everyone. It is a good starting point or re-enforcement of how to have a positive attitude."
* "I had recently been wondering and questioning why I decided to become a nurse. This book and program reminded me why I chose nursing and love what I do. Thank you."
* "At first, I was resentful about having to read the book and sit in a class. But then, I loved the book and will be making changes in my personal and professional life."
* "The key truly is with ME! I have gotten a great deal from the book and the program....and I am glad I got to participate.
