Free Mobile Digital Art: Using the iPad and iPhone as Creative Tools
David's book is a concentrated effort of dedication and love. We were a loosely associated group of international artists who discovered we could do art on our iPhones. Some of the apps created Groups on Flickr and we (I) thought, that's fun, I can do that. Then others said "How'd you do that, what app?" and from the beginning this group was about sharing. Seeing this book come to fruition and sharing not only those early techniques (the app I began on never made it to the iPad) is good for historical reasons (we were there with you, David Hockney) but also because these are very useful tutorials.
Large, lush-colored photos, step by step processes (and yes, it is all there) plus the dialogue to the side on why-wherefore. In fact, there was and is an amazing amount of things still to be learned for me as well. I've been enjoying re-reading how everyone did what and re-discovering old apps long in storage that work again in a different capacity.

The only complaint I have about this book is that it's heavy! But that means there's lots of good stuff in it! Fist there's a short overview of the history of mobile digital art and the early days (actually not that many years in the past) of cell phone cameras. Then there are sections on different artists and how they create their art. It helps a lot to download the apps they use and play around with them enough to get a feel for how they work and what they can do. This is not for beginners as many basic app and iPhone functions are not explained, but those with some basic iPhone camera skills and their own imagination will be inspired!
