Free Citrix XenDesktop Implementation: A Practical Guide for IT Professionals
Overall, I could have forgiven being mislead by the generalized title of this book if it had been better written.
I quickly found through reading it, that although it is advertised as a "Practical Guide for IT Professionals" its true intended audience is someone who:
-Is already familiar with Virtual Desktop Infrastructure
-Has already decided that Citrix is their chosen solution
-Will be implementing the project (ie setting up the servers, policies, etc)
-Has ready access to test environments, can create the necessary databases, assign policies, etc.
-And simply needs a step-by-step guide to do so
As an IT project manager who works at a company with an already established Citrix VDI solution, who is tasked with managing the projects to update/upgrade our Citrix environment and functionality, I found very little value in this book. Some of the members of the technical team flipped through it and agreed they might use it as a reference, but for me, I found I did not find:
-Any consideration for whether or not Citrix is the right solution
-Technical watchouts or considerations as it related to actually MANAGING a Citrix implementation PROJECT
-Any overall or background explanation of the technologies involved in order to bring someone unfamiliar with these specific technologies up-to-speed and fluent with them
-Any assistance for a non-specialized IT Professional for understanding these technologies and how to effectively work with the technical implementation team.
In addition, I felt the book was poorly written and edited:
-The author randomly switches between "This book will show you...", "We will be doing xyz...", "I have done xyz...", "You will do xyz...
