This highly-readable and engaging book was a delight, from beginning to end. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and learned a lot. Clifton's style is accessible -- even to someone like me, who's an Android fan, but not an accomplished programmer. Experienced devs and newbies alike will find this book to be a resource for years to come.
By Andrew Hickl
I'm an experienced Java developer and am familiar with UI/event-driven systems. Still, I found the learning curve on Android to be quite steep due to the inadequate documentation on the UI side of things. Sure, i've bought the usual books (Wrox, Apress, etc) but they have been very poor on teaching the UI. The Android books will tell you the basics, like how to put a static (xml-defined) image and a text box in a layout. What the books don't tell you is how to write a UI for any slightly complex real-world app. Like how to construct views dynamically, how to handle updating the views from a background thread (forbidden in Andoid!) and a hundred and one other issues that crop up when doing anything non-trivial.
This book to the rescue! I'm only a third of the way through it but am finding answers to my questions, solutions to my problems on almost every page. It is very well written and comes with just enough code examples to demo the concepts. I'm very pleased that I found this book. It is already a huge help.
