The health care system in the United States has been called the best in the world, but many of its residents cannot afford or do not have access to adequate care. Health Disparities in the United States explores how socioeconomic status, race, and ethnic make-up affect health disparities; what the wide gulf in care and health outcomes means for the medical community, cultural subsets, and society at large; and how to address the issue effectively.
Topics examined include: The relationship between income and social status and health care and outcomes The effect of race and ethnicity on health and the availability of care Conscious, unconscious, and institutionalized bias in treatment options How and when race and ethnicity should be taken into account in treating illness Practical and practicable ideas for reducing health disparities
Analyzing the complex web of social forces that influence health outcomes in the United States, this book is a vital teaching tool and a comprehensive reference for social science and medical professionals.

This book is a fabulous and easy to understand book on the social determinants of health. In fact, I am recommending this book to faculty and students at our medical school and posting a link on our Facebook "Public Health and Medicine Student Interest Group". It makes understanding of various concepts such as how stress creates illness easy to grasp.

This is the best book I know on the sociology of health and illness. I say this based on 30 years of teaching the sociology of medicine and my more or less constant scanning of the literature. This is the book I am using to teach the sociology of medicine.
Barr's book is easy to read and seems to be written primarily for physicians. Barr, however, is a sociologist who gives a full and theoretically accurate account of sociological theories of race, social causes of ill health, and physician behavior. In contrast to other accounts by sociologists, Barr as a physician gives excellent examples and references from the medical literature when he wants to give support from the physiological literature on his sociological claims. Barr's presentation about race disparities in medical treatment is both devastating and very careful. While he does not want to claim that physicians engage in racist practices when they care for patients and he is careful to show that there could be a number of causes for the outcomes he reports, it also is clear that blacks have worse outcomes from medical care than do whites.
