Don't get me wrong. This is a very good textbook (went through all but the last couple chapters) and it is very informative and easy to understand. The reason I am giving it three stars is that even though it costs near one hundred dollars it does not even include access to "MyProgrammingLab" which it makes it appear like it does. It even has a whole page (behind your access card) dedicated to "advertising" this site. If you want this, you have to pay an extra 40 bucks!!! WHAT A RIP OFF!
So the author of the book is very good, subject matter is always interesting, publishing company is greedy!
Overall great book if you dont mind being taken back a Benjamin.

Background/Positives:
My professor made this a required textbook for the 'intro to computer programming' class at my university and I read the entire book. For the most part the book moves at a steady pace and there are good explanations behind each topic. As a book for beginners(or people who have a little programming experience) this is a good choice for getting into java. At the end of each chapter the author includes a graphics section, which goes over how to make GUIs. They start off simple and continue to build as the book goes on. I wouldn't recommend this book for someone who is only interested in graphics as these parts are not as long as the regular chapters but like I said for a beginner/novice getting into java they can be quite helpful/interesting.
Negatives:
The only negatives I can think of are sometimes in the later chapters the book can get quite confusing and the author doesn't really help all that much as far as breaking it down for inexperienced programmers. Chapters that come to mind off the top of my head are 10&11(polymorphism and exception handling). The book offers a 6 month subscription to myprogramminglab(I believe) but I never used it myself so I cannot say if it works or not.
Overall:
Solid book and I would recommend it to a friend if they were thinking about getting started with java. 8/10.
